Join Buddhist teacher and author Ethan Nichtern, along with special guest Shannon Watts, for a free online discussion about engaged Buddhism and Dharma Moon's upcoming Yearlong Buddhist Studies course beginning in January 2025.

They will discuss the importance of studying Buddhism in a way that pushes us deeper into engagement with this messy and chaotic world, instead of retreating from it.

The Yearlong Buddhist Studies course offers a deep training in meditation, Buddhist philosophy and psychology, spanning the entire 2025 year.

Designed to be highly practical (and occasionally geeky), it will be a comprehensive overview of the Buddhist path, with an emphasis on the psychological, metaphysical, and socially engaged elements, and will help you establish or reestablish a commitment to regular meditation practice through a variety of Buddhist techniques.

Shannon Watts

Shannon Watts, widely known as the “summoner of women’s audacity,” is the founder of Moms Demand Action, the nation’s largest grassroots group fighting against gun violence. She was named one of TIME’s 100 Most Influential People, a Forbes 50 over 50 Changemaker, and a Glamour Woman of the Year.

The day after the Sandy Hook School mass shooting tragedy in 2012, she started a Facebook group to unite women against the gun lobby as Mothers Against Drunk Driving united mothers against the alcohol lobby in the 1980s. Under her leadership, Moms Demand Action became the nation’s largest grassroots group fighting against gun violence. The organization has a chapter in every state and over 10 million supporters, making it twice as large as the National Rifle Association. Over the past decade, Moms Demand Action volunteers passed over 500 gun safety laws; stopped the gun industry’s agenda in statehouses 90 percent of the time; elected thousands of gun sense candidates to office, including its own volunteers; and passed the first federal gun legislation in a generation.

Prior to founding Moms Demand Action, Watts – a mother of five – was a communications executive at public relations firms and Fortune 100 companies. She is an active board member of Emerge America, one of the nation’s leading organizations for recruiting and training women to run for office. Her book, Fight Like a Mother: How a Grassroots Movement Took on the Gun Lobby and Why Women Will Change the World, was released in May of 2019. She has a significant social media platform with a regular reach of over 10 million highly engaged supporters.

STUDENT FEEDBACK ON THE YEARLONG BUDDHIST STUDIES COURSE

"This is so hard to put into words. I have gained so much from this past year through the year long study. I have gained a deeper practice, become more in touch with myself, and gained a better understanding of the world around me. I am so grateful for this course and all the nuggets of wisdom I was able to take away."

“The online course allowed this full time working mom to have access to the dharma and a sangha in a way that would be otherwise impossible. When the stars align and I can attend the live class, Ethan and his guests are engaging and interactive. The break out sessions are also insightful. Definitely worth investing the time and money.”

"It was a lovely opportunity to engage with a variety of Buddhist traditions and practices, to share my understanding of Dharma with others, and to learn with other practitioners about how we each can bring the teachings to bear on our inner and outer lives."
